Right now as the temperature warms up to a balmy 36 degrees, which is 2 degrees warmer than our high today, I’m sure you are cuddled up with a blanket if you are like most of our clients and readers. We were blessed with an abundance of snow that moved in with the winter storm on Friday afternoon. That storm brought much needed snowfall to the region and blanketed the surrounding counties where the North Carolina ski resorts are located. If you are venturing out and about in the area and looking for fun things to do in West Jefferson and Ashe County, we’ve listed some fun events that are coming up this month that you may want to note.

Mt. Jefferson Hiking

At Mount Jefferson State Natural Area this Saturday January 14, 2017 you can check out the Geology Rocks Hike from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm. This special led hike takes hikers up the Rhododendron Trail at Mt. Jefferson, the prominent peak seen from West Jefferson. On it you’ll get to observe several types of formations and learn more about the formation of the mountains in our area. Hikers will meet at the picnic shelter at 2:00; hikers can call 336-246-9653 for more information. Sunday January 15, 2017 another hike will be offered at Mount Jefferson; the Underground Railroad hike. A ranger will lead the excursion that begins at the picnic area at 2:00 pm and the hike will feature regional folklore stories regarding our infamous mountain ridge, Mt. Jefferson and the actual Underground Railroad that was used by slaves who had escaped their masters and were hiding out and trekking to safety further north. It is believed that the mountain served as a hide out spot along the railroad, but actual artifact evidence of such claims have never been unearthed.

If you want to take part in a wonderful community outreach event and enjoy some delicious southern fried fish, head out to the Ashe Outreach Fish Fry on Friday January 20, 2017 from 4:00 to 8:00 at the Riverview Community Center. This  event features $10 plates (or additional donations if you’d like to provide more) of fish or chicken, hush puppies, coleslaw with a drink and dessert and supports the Riverview community. During the harsh months of winter, many of our neighbors struggle to pay their heating bills, and have trouble with food costs as a result.
